my artist statement
For my artwork, I was inspired by Sean Forest Roberts. I wanted to have a unique texture and style that someone could tell was one of my pieces. I tried a method called wax inlay. Wax inlay is when you take a piece that is leather hard and cover it in wax. You cover it in wax because the wax keeps glaze from sticking to the part of your pot that isn’t the pattern. Then once the wax is dry you carve a pattern into the piece. This carves away the wax. Then, you cover the pot in underglaze, giving it color. You then take a sponge and wipe away the extra glaze, revealing your pattern. I chose a swirls pattern, so my work is identifiable. I wanted people to look at my art and know it was mine because of my signature pattern.
